BROUGHTONKNOWE COMMUNITY WOODLAND
Broughtonknowe Community Woodland Ltd is a charitable company caring for around 135 acres of woodland on behalf of local people and future generations.
We were created so that this special woodland could remain permanently protected, publicly accessible and carefully managed for the benefit of wildlife, the environment and people. In 2025, following a successful community fundraising campaign supported by hundreds of individuals, local organisations, businesses and public bodies, we purchased the woodland and ownership transferred into community hands.
Today, we are responsible for ensuring that Broughtonknowe remains a place where nature can flourish, people can enjoy the outdoors and local communities can come together to learn, volunteer and care for the environment.
What We Do
Everything we do is guided by our charitable purposes. Our work includes:
- protecting and enhancing the woodland’s wildlife, habitats and biodiversity;
- managing the woodland sustainably for future generations;
- maintaining paths, bridges, boardwalks, seating and other visitor facilities;
- providing opportunities for recreation, health and wellbeing;
- supporting outdoor learning and environmental education;
- encouraging volunteering, community participation and local stewardship;
- improving public access while respecting the woodland’s natural heritage.
The woodland is managed for people and nature together. We believe that careful conservation and responsible public enjoyment go hand in hand.
Caring for a Living Woodland
Looking after a woodland is an ongoing responsibility rather than a one-off project.
Our volunteers and trustees work throughout the year to maintain paths, monitor wildlife, improve habitats, install nest boxes, manage ponds, plant native species and care for visitor facilities. We also work with local schools, youth groups, conservation organisations, artists and volunteers to ensure the woodland continues to benefit the widest possible range of people.
Alongside conservation, we are gradually developing sustainable sources of income that can help support the long-term management of the woodland. This includes responsible woodland management and small community enterprises that contribute to the charity’s future sustainability.
These plans are intended to help ensure that Broughtonknowe remains financially resilient while always putting conservation and community benefit first.
RUN BY THE COMMUNITY
Broughtonknowe Community Woodland Ltd is a Scottish charitable company limited by guarantee (Scottish Charity Number SC053888).
The charity is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees who are responsible for ensuring that the woodland is managed in accordance with our charitable purposes and for the benefit of the public. Trustees receive no payment for serving on the Board and work alongside volunteers, members and the wider community.
We welcome new ideas, new volunteers and are always open to local people who might wish to volunteer as new trustees thanks to a shared passion for the woodland.
